A large system without a greenhouse can be very effective. But greenhouses are also commonly used for professional growers with an outdoor system because an outdoor setup can sometimes be more difficult to supervise and handle. If you are planning to grow your own vegetables with an aquaponics system then one of the most important things that you have to know is that you cannot grow vegetables in the same environment as your plants. So, you have to use a greenhouse specifically designed for aquaponics.
First you have to choose a good location for your greenhouse. This will depend on the size of your large aquaponics system. A large tank will obviously need to be bigger than a small tank. But the main thing you have to consider is the amount of sunlight the area can get. If you have chosen to use a aquaponics greenhouse then you can either get it professionally installed or just install whatever you find attractive and suits your taste. You should also make sure that there will be no plant disease or pollution in the surrounding areas.
Once you have made your decision on where to install your greenhouse you need to think of a good design. A layout plan will help you determine how the water will flow into the large system. You will also have to consider other factors such as ventilation, nutrients, food chain etc. Once all the above design plans are ready, you can now start building the structure. To build a hydroponic system without greenhouse is very difficult but not impossible. The first thing you have to do is to make sure the water drains out of the bottom of the house; this can be done using pipes or using a special device.
Once this task is over you can now install the equipment such as pumps, filters and aquaponics nutrients such as fish pellets into the large system. You can now install the tubing and other materials for the greenhouse. The last task is to run the electric wires throughout the whole system.
If you are planning to use fish as your main food source then you will have to change your fish diet. If you’re thinking of growing tropical fish then you might want to choose fish with large bones as they are easier to feed. Some of the best tropical plants that you can use for aquaponics are Java Moss and Java Fern.
On a lighter note, you can also grow vegetables such as onions, peppers, squash, lettuce etc. on your aquaponics system. Some of the best vegetables you can grow in a setup would be Broccoli, Zucchini, Carrots, Peas and Bell Peas. These vegetables grow very well in an aquaponics environment.
In some cases, you will have to transfer your aquarium to another location if the plants do not tolerate being planted in the ground. This is especially true of Java Fern, which can grow extremely fast. Your last task before installing your aquaponics greenhouse is to run all the wiring through the greenhouse. This makes it extremely easy to do any maintenance you want. Once the plants start to bloom you will have a thriving aquaponic system.
Installation of a hydroponics greenhouse is one of the easiest jobs you can do with DIY projects. For the longest time I had trouble with my first fish tank project. It was installed on a cement slab and the fish never seemed to acclimate to the new water temperature. The large fish tanks that I used for tilapia did eventually acclimate but I would still recommend using fish tanks for tilapia if you are considering aquaponics systems as a future project.
