Chicken Aquaponics: Monitoring Nitrates

Chicken Aquaponics: Monitoring Nitrates

When we take the nutrient solution directly from the biological reactor, we measure nitrate levels that are well above 40ppm. We believe high levels of nitrates might have a negative impact on plant growth. So, we are going to experiment with different concentrations of diluted nutrient solution. We have set up 3 grow bins. In the first bin, we are adding 3 cups of solution from the bio-reactor and 30 cups of water. The second bin is 5/20, and the third bin is 10/10. Now we will monitor the growth of the plants and report their development periodically.

Our desire is to be successful at growing leafy vegetables with solution taken directly from our system, and without having to add nutrients. Our prediction is that the plants will display some level of nutrient deficiency, however, if we can grow an abundance of edible green vegetables with minor deficiencies, we will consider the project a success.
