The Konkan region consisting of the narrow strip of India’s Western Ghats and the coastal plains is a region with a rich agricultural heritage. Major traditional agricultural crops grown include rice, millets, pulses among field crops, and coconut, mango, cashew nut, betel nut, aonla, vanilla, pineapple, etc. among horticultural crops.
Major challenges for growing crops in this region
•High summer temperature and humidity are major problematic factors.
•High humidity causes a lot of fungal and bacterial diseases which is difficult to manage in this region.
•Frequent occurrence of cyclones from Arabian sea causing damage to crops.
•High insect pest pressure during summer and monsoon due to intensive farming.
Polyhouses are not performing well and due to cyclones, these structures are getting damaged frequently. Therefore, Growers are looking for suitably protected cultivation technologies for such hot and humid conditions.
