How to Use a Humidifier for Your Houseplants 💦🌱

Tropical indoor houseplants need more humidity than we give them, especially in the colder months. The solution is to use a humidifier for plants, so here are a few recommendations on how to set one up, where to place it, as well as the one I think is the best cool mist humidifier for the money.

I set the humidistat on mine to about ~50%. With that setting, mine runs for DAYS without needing to be refilled.

  1. I have a Calathea right now that is a tropical plant that needs to be in a high humidity environment. Recently, I bought a humidifier for it but I am not quite sure how far should the humidifier be from the plant and the pot seems to be wet because of the humidifier, any tips about it?

  2. I have the same humidifier. Works great! I live in edmonton alberta in canada, are winters are cold and DRY. I fill this bad boy up and let er run at 35% till its empty. My plants seem to like it, I dont get nose bleeds at night, and my cat has less dander. Triple win

  3. I use a warm mist evaporator for myself.
Unfortunately, I think if I keep my plants too close, it burns them. I had some calatheas, marantas, and ferns near it and they have damaged leaves now. I don't really want to buy a new humidifier…

  4. There’s a cool mist and a warm mist. Is there a difference in how they affect plants (calathea, monster) in winter months? I live in Los Angeles and the outdoor humidity is really low 20% 70 deg f. Which would you recommend during the colder months?

  5. Do you notice this brand humidifier getting stuck??? I got 1. But the rH% will get stuck while my sensors show higher RH…..then boom it realizes it too high. Shuts off
And same there. Sometimes stays off too long. Realizes wayyyyy to late how low it is. Kicks on…

  6. Hey plant lovers the new Taotronic humidifier on amazon is top loading for easy refill
I live on the West Coast of Canada so my humidity level is naturally high in the warm months but now with the heat it’s dropped drastically:(
    Also I use rain water
No build up & probably better for the plants..
    Thanks for the helpful video

  7. I have a 2 part question:
I see it has a filter. Can it be cleaned? And after how long do you actually have to replace it? Thanks.

  8. Great video! Thanks!
You mentioned that you use Plant Grow Lights. Could you please tell me which you prefer? I would really appreciate your advice. 🌻🌱🌿🌳

  9. Hello! This video was very helpful. I have a Vick’s brand humidifier that I used when my son was little. Would it be harmful to use that on my plants?

  10. But what to do if your home has wood floor ?
Also another question is how wide of an area does the humidifier work? Do you need multiple if you have a lot of plants or a big plant room ?
Also I find that the humidity percent is often wrong displayed on the screen

  11. How far away should we put the humidifier from tropical plants? I have a corner of my house with my tropical plants and don’t know if it should be close to them.

  12. I'm a biotech engineering student studying thermodynamics and chemical processes and shit and you dead-ass explained the whole "relative humidity vs temperature" thing SO good so that those who don't know it will understand. Really like that you could phrase it so logically because I've often failed to do so! 🙂

  13. @epic gardening have you tried to measure humidity with a separate humidity meter to verify the humidity percentage after turning on the humidifier? I got the newer model of the Tao Tronics but the humidity % did not change at all … thanks

  14. Thank you, needed this video. We have the same humidifier so it was nice to see how you used it. I'll start using filtered water -does cool boiled water work as well? Also, is it ok to place a humidifier in a big open space? Not a small room.

  15. Really happy I came across your video! I read your blog post before about the best humidifiers, and I purchased this exact humidifier last week. My one question would be, is it ok that the mist cascades down onto my plants or is it better to just have the mist directed slightly away from them? I worry about mold and such saying as I’m already putting more moisture into the air. I can’t find any resources online about this matter, although upon searching for this answer I came across your blog which in turn led me to your video so I’m definitely going to be watching more of yours! 🙂 thanks so much for the information!

Side note for anyone considering buying this humidifier: do it! It’s a great price point and it’s one of the best investment I’ve made for my plants.

  16. Very informative video! I read in an article that you need a fan to help crest air circulation along with the humidifier, is it actually necessary? Just trying to make sure I don’t kill my monstera and pothos!

  17. Thanks for the share. I live in NH and I am curious on your thoughts on this. My BF (who owns the house) is giving me grief and thinks I'm bringing mold possibilities into the home. I'm dying with this struggle to have my plants that make me happy, keeping them alive in a cold state with forced heat, and keeping him happy i.e out of my hair. 💚🌱🥴
