Commissioning a Biomass Heating System in a Remote Alaska Community

Commissioning a Biomass Heating System in a Remote Alaska Community

Walter Heins, P.E., CxA, Coffman Engineers
Jonathan Fitzpatrick, Southeast Island School District

This case study examines the commissioning of a project in Alaska, where five communities developed a program in which biomass boilers not only heat the school and greenhouse, but provide community-strengthening opportunities for involvement and economic development. The Southeast Island School District (SISD) learned valuable lessons that led to improved Owner’s Project Requirements, revised design criteria, and important startup and operational criteria.
