Refrigerator Outside Vent Fan (Needs 1 Amp Fuse! – Update Video Available!)

Refrigerator Outside Vent Fan (Needs 1 Amp Fuse! - Update Video Available!)

In RV fridge’s there is no moving parts. Creating heat and dissipating it draws heat out of the fridge and the lack of heat leaves cold. This fan helps heat dissipate faster off of the coils.

A 1 amp fuse, located between the switch and the fan needs to be installed. As an installer, having watched videos and read comments on the product itself, I felt 100% comfortable with my install. A commenter named James Paul noticed the lack of a fuse and pointed that out to me. My initial response was to defend the install based on my previous research. He placed a seed of doubt in my mind which always happens when safety is involved for me. James made sense and I contacted Valterra hoping to validate my defensive position. In fact, James was correct. According to Belinda Walker at Valterra, the result of our conversations is that the issue has been routed all the way to THE top. Future instructions will include terminology, in the instructions, to add a 1 amp fuse and where to install it. I’m hoping that Valterra will take the extra step and provide a 1 amp inline fuse assembly in the packaging with the fan. I want to thank James Paul for his insight and for stepping up in a thoughtful and productive way for all of us. Update video located here: I love chatting with folks and answering questions.

What do you think?

  1. How much cooler did your fridge run after this mod?

I purchased two of these fans to install behind my double door 12cuft fridge in my new Grand Design Reflection 5th wheel. I also bought one of the triple fan units that attach to the fins inside the fridge. I hope these mods help to keep it nice and cool.

  2. See that dead air space above your refrigerator? That is a hot spot and hot air stays up there and your new fan pulls that hot air out but it helps if you make a part to cover that and make it with bend to force the hot air out the vent. That hot air sits up on top and heats up the refrigerator. or pack that complete area with installation.

  3. There doesn't appear to be an inline fuse at the 12VDC connection! Were a short occur in the added wiring, the wire could melt with the possibility of igniting a fire. I wonder why the manufacturer left off this $1 safety feature.
