Plastic Free Hydroponic Grow Box / DIY Hydroponics
I made a grow box out of marble about a year ago. Here is an update on the second crop I am growing in it. The container is plastic free and a small piece of pool noodle holds the plant in place.

plastic IS the solution
Hi great video,
Can you explain why not to use plastic?
New to this so maybe this is a dumb question 😂
I'm really digging your hydroponic garden.
This is amazing! I was wondering how other cheap materials could be used to build pots like this
Awesome vid..thanx again my friend🙏
Why marble? Is there any grow benefit to the marble, or is it just aesthetic?
hey mike have you ever done bare root strawberries in down spouts ???????
I bought a couple of Sorrel plants two years ago in the ornamental section at the nursery. Had no idea what they were. They were just pretty. Planted them and they come back every year. I then bought some seeds a few weeks ago and have some growing in my Kratky buckets. What exactly do you do with it. I know it's sour and I've heard of Sorrel soup.
Marble should not mess up your Ph, an acid Ph will dissolve the marble then you will get Ph problems. Plastics are fine if you are using a UV resistant plastic such as PTFE, that also has excellent chemical resistance. (There are plenty of other polymers that have this resistance to chose from)
Food grade stainless steel is possibly the best option and you would likely be contracted to use it if you were selling on an industrial level.
I understand that polymers have a bad rep, but they are not bad when you consider the alternatives. Would you still have piano keys and snooker balls made from Ivory? The problem is not plastic, but how humans dispose of it.
Amazing !!! I do want to try this too !
hey mike Steve from Tampa here doing first fall grow what should I put in my 5 gallon bucket with master blend Fert.
Hi Mike, if people are upset at using PLASTIC DOWNSPOUTS then why not use the metal downspouts? Ya, they are a little harder to drill out and to bend the ends, BUT they are NOT PLASTIC! Those who are that worried about plastics need to investigate how much Plastic is used in their cars. Then they can trade them in for horses and deal with all that TOXIC WASTE!!!
So inspiring, thanks 🙂
Pool noodles and downspout have changed my business for the better 🤘😎
Long live the MVD kratky system 🤙🌱🌱🔥
I am also have been thinking how can we get rid of the pool noodle. Thank you for sharing your ideas. I have also noticed that the pool noodle lets some light thru to the inside, I am considering making a tin foil cover for the pool noodle cut outs. I believe we can keep making the system better.
I have thought of clay fired in a kiln to make the exact shapes we want. I am also experimenting with glass with good results, I put aluminum foil on the outside with 1 Gal Apple jars.
Love that tile box. Have you ever tested the PH to see if they are right? Never used tile before but would like to know if it makes a difference. Your systems are doing super will buddy. Tree rats said thx for the snacks. LOL.
Looking great Mike! Thanks for sharing! 👍😎
Super interesting!! Great idea!!
