Grafting a 4-Pear Tree

Grafting a 4-Pear Tree

I have decided to convert my callery pears into fruiting pears. The smaller of the two I did is a test and did it all at once. I took a big chance with that one based on YouTube research. The bigger of the two, I just did a few lower, smaller branches in case they failed. At least that way, the bigger tree would still look the same. Callery pears are known to start breaking branches with age and mine are 11 years old. They are also considered invasive by many states. I like pears so I’m going for it. I’ve tried growing Bartlett pears. They succumb to fire blight here and never produced so I yanked them and planted 4 types that do well here are are known to produce flavorful pears. These 4 are planted out back. In this video, I took scion wood off them and grafted them onto the callery. So far, it seems to be doing well. We will see!

  1. You did what I did. Put the graft to far out on the limb. Need to put close to the tree. Now I need to prune my grafted limb off?

  2. QUESTION PLEASE !!! ,I HAVE TWO GIGANTIC ORNAMENTAL PEAR TREES IN THE YARD ,IM GOING TO CUT DOWN TO TWO OR THREE FEET ABOVE GROUND ,CAN I GRAFT ANOTHER PEAR SINR=E TO THIS AND MAKE IT GROW REAL PEARS ? ,CAN I ALSO PUT CITRUS,APPLE ,PLUM ,ETC., TO THIS ALREADY 25 YR OLD ROOT STOCK TREE ??? THANK YOU KINDLY IN ADVANCE FOR ANSWERING ,GOD BLESS YOU!!!!!

  3. If too much of the wood glue gets into the graft it can interfere with the absorption of water and nutrients. Go easy with the stuff, especially if the glue can run down into the graft. You may have noticed in the video; most of the weak growing grafts had a pretty vertical aspect and attachment was on an almost level cut trunk. The first one that started growing vigorously was cut the trunk at more of an angle to shed excess water and help eliminate trunk rot. You may have noticed that the first one that started vigorously growing was on a stock branch that was almost horizontal. Very little glue seeped down into the joint and it wasn't affected by the glue like the topped trunk grafts were. I am wondering how the tree is doing lately?

  4. Not to be snarky but my take on it is that you jumped the gun a good deal and still had respectable results. Looking forward to trying it myself. I would have waited until the flowers were mostly gone and the leaves were pretty good sized. I also would have left more nursery branches at four points of the compass to supply sap to the grafts. Wish I had seen yours and your mentor's channel before I lost my Italian pear, but I can graft my remaining with another 1/2 mile away and the other way around to have fruit at both places just the same. Similar story with a remote granny smith and my Williams Pride and Lodi. Tried 5 years ago but with same size stock and it didn't work out. But also didn't make the connection to fridge kept dormant scions onto bigger well growing and sap filled wood. Timing in other words can be very important. If I hadn't seen your success, I wouldn't be as excited as I am for my own, thanks for posting.

  5. Thanks so much for the timelapse showing your grafts. I just did some grafts of pear trees, and this is a great comparison for me.

Thanks again, I really appreciate it!

  6. Thank you for posting I have few questions, I am going to follow your foot steps, here in northern Utah we still have snow on the ground, today I got my scions they are still dormant , I put them in a plastic bag with some wet paper towel and sealed the bag and put them in refrigerator with vegetables, there is some water in the bag, I am wondering I am doing this right or scions are going to rut. I read some people put bag under snow, or in the freezer. Please tell me if I am doing this right. second question is when is the best time to graft,is it when scions are start to budding or when the tree that going to receive the graft..
    thanks
