THE TRUTH ABOUT AQUARIUM FILTERS - CANISTERS

Aquarium canister filtration. The truth behind them and how to actually size one to your fish tank.
Over the past 11 years, i have also mentioned rinsing your mechanical sponge in a bucket of tank water so as not to kill the bacteria living on it. While you shouldn’t DEPEND on mechanical sponge when you have dedicated bio media to run an aquarium, it of course is considered and plays a role in bio filtration.

  1. Over the past 11 years, i have also mentioned rinsing your mechanical sponge in a bucket of tank water so as not to kill the bacteria living on it. While you shouldn't DEPEND on mechanical sponge when you have dedicated bio media to run an aquarium, it of course is considered and plays a role in bio filtration.

  2. So what didn't you demonstrate how to properly add filtration to it to maximize the filters ability? On my FX4 i do use a sponge in the top but mechanical in the rest of the center trays.

  3. The valve at the bottom worked out great for me. I ran a hose from it and ran the other end to the ptrap on my sink. Now all I do is unplug the pump and turn that bottom valve and my 220gallon will drain 30% in about 10mins. I know thats not how they intended it to be used but it works out great.

  4. As a pond guy I totally agree with this. IMHO always go big filter wise.

Limited ability aside it looks like an interesting filter, if used properly.

  5. I respect you a lot for this video. The bigger you are, the harder it is to speak honesty. You're pretty big and this is as honest as it gets. Great stuff Joey.

  6. man… more science majors need to see this and say something like on "rate my professor"… he doesn't sounds as smart as he think he is, he is right, but so dramatic

  7. One of the nice things about the FX6 is if you have a 4 ft. long aquarium (like my 110 gallon), you can fit 3 of these filters comfortably side by side in the Marineland Monterey stand! Makes for a nice setup. I can only imagine how much better it would be in the 90 gallon or 75 gallon aquariums of the same footprint (only shorter). Thanks for this nice video!

  8. you sound mad bro. (lol) I get it. But yeah, all the manufacturers have stooped to this level. And as you know, noobs will walk in the door and see the numbers and compare only that number. I prefer sticking with a freshwater sump.

  9. OK so I did a aquarium dividing wall where the front, back & 1 side is exposed & 1 side is against the wall.
It's a 6 foot 150 gollan tank. My question is because i want to hide wire & tubs & run everything from 1 end. what would you suggest as a filter? Im thinking about running 1 or 2 MarineLand Magnum Polishing Internal Canister Filters to put on the side wall. ( the goal is to have discus & my gourami in the tank) sorry for the long question lol

  10. Personally, I love Hagen products. They make the Exo Terra line of herpetoculture supplies, including some of the best cages on the market for smaller species. TBH, I have several Exo Terra products in my reptile room, and I've never had a problem with any of them. However, their misting systems (or anything to do with a pump) leave much to be desired — you honestly don't even want to know what I went through with the Monsoon system. Hagen also really loves to jack up the price of their equipment. While I'd love to try out an FX-series filter, I know better than to trust a pump from Hagen.

  11. Once you understand how bio-media works and how beneficial bacteria colonizes throughout the system, you'll understand the advertisements and marketing claims are pure bs.

  12. The eheim 1500xl is a much better option for large tanks. It comes empty so you can customize the media as you see fit. It has the inlet at the bottom and the outlet at the top which is the best way to avoid media bypass. They aren't cheap but you get what you pay for and eheim classics last longer than any filter on the market.
