  1. I think the confusion about the "anecdotal" ways of sexing different species (pointed fins, colorations etc) can be explained by the observation that many genes with visible phenotypes are actually sex linked, meaning they are on the sex chromosomes or linked with additive sexual genes. Guppies are notorious for this. They are easy to sex, but many interesting traits are on the X or Y chromosomes. Others are hormonally influenced, and because hormones are complicated and the underlying alleles vary in a larger population, the anecdotal ways of sexing often go wrong. Or they just switch their sex after they developed all the traits of their first sex.

  2. One of the problems with sexing fish is that there are multiple mechanisms of how the fish themselves "know" which gender to be. In most species this is genetic, similar to mammalian XY chromosomes. Some, for example guppies, can have alleles on other chromosomes that "override" the sex chromosomes, changing the sex ratio. In sturgeon they know it's genetic but haven't found out how yet, which is a pain for aquaculturists. It means you have to raise male and female for a few years until you can tell by ultrasound. In some species (wasn't it also some poecilids?) the sex can even change. I've had some ideas how to sex certain fish species early and non-fatally, but those aren't practical for most fish keepers.

  3. Hi how do I sex my feather fin catfish who is around six months old..beautiful dorsal fin growing nicely..has two round dots one the anal gland and the other obviously the sexual gland..both are the same size and same colour which are a cream/white..the catfish has a range of foods good temps nice water ph ok..glands are not pink..does all this mean I have a male ?

  4. Id not thought of using film or photographs to do this – u can get the fish back in the water and then spend as much time as u need looking at the recording. Thats actually a great way of sexing fish without stressing them out too much. Thanks for a great tip!
