An aquarium auto top off (ATO) is a great way to keep your aquarium topped off while your away! Especially if it doesn’t cost you anything!

Evaporation effects us all to some extent. So hopefully this project helps!

  1. Suggestion for a more stable setup is to NOT cut off the portion that fits inside the tank. Simply keep the bottle intact but just cut a uniform slit. Secondly, make the slit long enough so the bottle holder sits deeper within the tank. Also find a bottle that has thicker plastic. This way, you won't have to rely on tape to keep it steady.

  2. I ran in to a problem making this. My 10 gallon tank has a rim around for a top that came with the starter kit I got. The bottle can't make it down to the water because it gets squashed between the holder and rim. Any ideas how to overcome this?

  3. For those of you that don't have a sump and high flow. Cut the top off of one plastic bottle, drill small holes in it, and place it top up inside the tank. This will create a low flow baffle kind of like an intake refugium.
