The School of Aquaponics

I started cycling my small 500 liter system with fish (no plants yet) and had nitrates appearing after 5 days and had steady increase the next 5 days up to 30ppm and it started declining. Last night, the 15th day of cycling, the nitrates totally disappeared. Tried retesting to validate and got a consistent result, as in zero. The temperature has dropped here to about 23C last night… could it be the cause of denitrification? Ammonia is about 8ppm nitrite is about 5ppm which doesn't seem to drop since day 11. There's enough aeration. pH has been unusually high at an average of 8.5… Should I restart the cycling or just ride it out?
Hi about growers supply that was not including the RAF beds
Growers supply sad it would cost to get in to Aquaponics 2 do 3 raft beds 8'56' $40.000. What do you think about that is that true the we were going to us tilapia fish Jeff
am understanding
denitrification could occur in aerobic condition too.
👍
Might be algae, might be bacterial balancing. (Microbiological process has the tendency to auto-balance the nutrients in the system, this is why you always here the pro's saying, "we try not to get too involved in the system", adding synthetic nutrients etc.)
👍🏾
Woow great vid ,it was denitrification that was taking place in my fine solids filter. Thanks for the info
I wonder that since Mulah said he added ammonia and then a 'few days later he had 20 ppm nitrates' doesn't it take more than a few days for nitrates he may have confused nitrates for nitrites… that is what usually hits first after ammonia right, he says he stopped ammonia and his 'nitrates' dropped, could that be because he stopped feeding the nitrite bacteria and more than likely added topoff water which would dilute the solution. I am new and learned what I believe I know about this mostly from you, I'll be moving water in probably 2 weeks and starting the cycle so this is a very interesting subject… one thing I know for sure, I know I will be paying more than the usual attention to details like shaking the bottle when I get there… thanks
Great video on the subject. If he has areas of low flow in his filtration tank nitrates could drop because of anoxic zones. If he doesn't use aeration (an air stone) in the filtration tank or has too small of one this could also be the problem. Depending on the filtration media thickness this too could be creating anoxic zones in his filtration by itself. Algae and bio-film build up after the cycling is usually what causes this in aquariums. People forget every surface exposed to water in the aquaponics equipment is alive with the nitrogen cycle which includes the soil.
(I'm an aquarist who purposely builds anoxic zones for denitrification so water changes are minimal with my tanks. I also have to supplement my tanks with nitrogen to obtain any plant growth once a month.)
Any recommendations on books that cover nitrification and a deeper understanding on bacteria, specific to aquaponics? Or any aquaponics literature?
Question love the channel. What happened to Carlos? The style is great I was just wondering.
Could algae in the system be dropping his nitrate levels?
Another great video my man.
I was wondering what types of plants would you not recommend in aquaponics?
Great hat
Another nice video my friend I would like to know how long does it take to find a change in pH (ammonia) after feeding the fish????
Thank you!!! This is one of the videos i was expecting. since i cycled my aquarium, my nitrates havent go up. and i do not change the water, i was expecting to the nitrates to increase
i hit like button even before watching. love your energy! learned so much.
