Here is a Do-It-Yourself (DIY) Swirl Filter used for cleaning the waste water in an aquaponic system. This is a budget solution that uses an inexpensive High Density Poly Ethylene (HDPE) Drum. The HDPE drum is used to house the filtering components. The pipes and connectors are made from PVC components. A Matala Pond Filter is used to strain the sediments and solids from waste water that comes from the fish pool/aquarium.
The input into the drum is a 2-inch pipe that terminates into a T-connector that has 45-degree elbows pointing in opposite directions. This configuration causes the swirling movement within the drum to occur.
The sediment and waste solids drop to the bottom of the drum. The surface water that is above the matala filter material is ‘clean’ and only contains the nutrients used to feed the plants.
Cleaning the matala filter material is accomplished by simply removing it from the filter mechanism container and washing it down with a garden hose.
