Barnacles on Crabs Gills- Compound Microscope Magnification

Barnacles on Crabs Gills- Compound Microscope Magnification

We often find barnacles on crabs that are being disected. The barnacles in small numbers are usually harmless and reside in the gills of the crab. Similar to filter feeders, the barnacles latches themselves onto the gills and absorb nutrients in via the respiratory currents generated by the crab! This is often known as a comensalism relationship between the crabs and the barnacle. It is quite commonly seen in wild catches, and the the barnacles are lost after moulting!

A big thank you for Institute of Tropical Aquaculture – Akuatrop UMT for letting us take nice videos of these phenomenon with your microscope! 🙂
