Aeroponics: gardening simple systems for your home

Aeroponics: gardening simple systems for your home

Hydroponics used to be a complicated matter that was out of reach for homeowners. There were large kits for purchase and DIY systems but they all were large and took up a lot of room in the home. Today, there are systems that are small and compact and yield enough produce for a family and is a fun way to get kids (and adults!) into gardening. With different systems come different colors of lights. The basic colors needed for good plant growth are red, blue and white, sometimes in more advanced systems there are green and far red. Blue light encourages vegetative growth, red light ,when combined with blue, allows plants to flower, white light mimics sunlight and helps with photosynthesis, green penetrates the thick upper leaf canopy and reaches the bottom leaves and far red encourages leaf growth and reduces time plants need to flower. It also produces larger leaves. There are currently several options of simple and easy hydroponic systems for homeowners on the market. They are great for starting transplants for the garden, providing herbs and produce during the winter and an educational tool for me and my friends.
